RFO for Network Connectivity – 06/04/2020
Impact: From 1457 until 1522 (25 minutes) on Monday, 6th of April 2020, we lost connectivity for all web hostingin our London Central facility. The outage was due to a SYN flood attack (a form of DOS attack) against our network which resulted in the firewall pair protecting these servers to begin restricting SYN connections.
Remedial Steps: Once our team determined the source of the problem and to get things back online as quickly as possible, we temporarily disabled SYN flood protection on the relevant firewall pair. Note that this action does not decrease the security of our network and servers.
Going forward, we have increased the packet threshold for SYN flood attacks. This variable had been erroneously set too low for an attack situation and well below what our network and firewalls are capable of safely handling. We are confident this is now set suitably and do not expect further issues.
We are extremely sorry to our customers for the inconvenience caused and we thank you for your patience and understanding. We do appreciate it.
